Security at Mary Emily Bryan Middle School has increased for the last few weeks of school following a reported threat from a former student to go to the school with a gun.
The 14-year-old boy was taken into custody after he allegedly made the threat to another student who attends the school through the social networking site MySpace. The message said the sender was going to go get a gun and shoot everyone and that he “was serious.” The student received the message on Saturday and and reported it to his principal on Monday.
The school resource officer took the suspect into custody and referred him to juvenile authorities, according to Lt. Craig McGuire, public information officer for the St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department.
The school will have two additional security guards stationed at the school for the last few weeks of the school year in addition to the school resource officer, said Francis Howell School District Spokeswoman Jennifer Gasper. Teachers are addressing questions from students as they come up, she said.
“The staff is aware of the situation so they are keeping an eye out to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary and to provide peace of mind to the students,” she said.
