Policy change to teacher retirement benefits delayed

A change to teacher retirement that was mandated by the Social Security Administration will be pushed off by one year after teachers across the state lobbied against it.

Vocational teachers, speech language therapists, band directors and special education teachers were among those who stood to lose up to one-third of their retirement benefits under the change.

Many teachers in the Francis Howell School District called and sent letters to their U.S. Representatives who worked to have the change stalled. The new deadline to implement the changes will be July 1, 2010.

The delay will give teachers groups more time to work against it, according to Francis Howell Superintendent Renee Schuster.
